Gaston Leroux

Gaston Leroux came to Pit Bull Rescue San Diego after spending a long time at a local shelter. His luck seemed to have run out: he was found as a stray, and then his owner never came looking for him. With such a stellar personality, and having charmed staff and volunteers alike with his big smile, he was made available for adoption, but sadly nobody showed any interest in him. To top it off, he had been found with multiple foxtails embedded all over his face and forearms, leaving his handsome face scarred on one side -- hence his name Gaston, the author of the novel "Phantom of the Opera," referring to the famous main character of the book. So what many assume to be fight scars are in fact sad reminders of the neglect that he suffered in the past.

One thing's for sure though, the similarities between Gaston and the character he is named after stops at his physical appearance. He may be a big boy, but he melts like butter in your arms. He loves people, is very polite on leash, and has the brains to go along with his good looks. Gaston knows several commands and will do anything -- and we mean anything -- for a tasty treat. His eagerness to please and affinity for snacks makes him a star candidate to succeed in positive reinforcement training classes with his new family.

Gaston loves to meet new dog friends and will do well with dog-smart kids. As long as he's with his people, he's a happy boy, which includes going for rides in the car. We're not sure yet how he feels about kitties. He's doing well with his housetraining after spending such a long time in the shelter, and is adjusting well to life in a loving, home environment. A happy side note about our wonderful supporters:
The first day out of the shelter - "The vet actually saw him this morning, gave him is rabies and microchipped him. In addition, he provided some antibiotics, as Gaston's face was bleeding (minor) and was somewhat swollen. The vet did not like the look of his wound area. He did suggest we give him a bath, but not the head area at this time. Gaston is filthy.

I was telling the girl in the office about his sad, sad story, and some nice patron insisted on paying the bill. She was so happy our group was doing what we did, and felt like she should contribute. She would not give me her name/address, refused a receipt, but did take our business card. She wanted to learn more about us and see if there was anything else she could do to help. So, Gaston has a guardian angel."

Adopting me will be a lifelong commitment, and my new family needs to be ready, willing and able to provide me not only with lots of love as an indoor member of the family, but also with ongoing training and socialization.

Please note that Pit Bull Rescue San Diego does not adopt on a first come first served basis. Generally we have formed an opinion about the sort of home that we want for each of the dogs in our program. This opinon is formed from knowing each dog and observing their interactions in various situations and through periodic evaluations. Our goal is to place our charges in the home that is the best possible for that particular dog. Our only goal is happiness and forever homes for our dogs. A forever home is most likely to happen when we do the best we can to find lifestyles and personalities that match.

We are aware that this is a human process and that you may or may not agree with our decisions. Please understand that we take very seriously the lives placed in our hands for this brief time and our decisions are only made out of protectiveness for the breed and the specific dogs we are placing and not out of any judgment of you or your life.
